Why Africa’s Future Rides on Entrepreneurs
“Africa’s future will be driven by entrepreneurs,” says Ian Lorenzen, Executive Director and Partner at GrowthAfrica. And he doesn’t say it lightly. For Ian, entrepreneurship is the beating heart of Africa’s economic transformation, an engine fueled by young people with global mindsets, access to ideas, and the boldness to act.

Across the continent, a new generation of founders is rising. Solution builders. “They’re addressing real societal issues,” Ian notes, “and building models rooted in impact and relevance.” But this surge of innovation faces a critical gap: the ability to grow from promise to scale.
According to Ian, one of the most pressing challenges is creating the pipeline, helping early-stage businesses evolve to the point where they’re ready for significant capital and operational expansion. “Raising capital is largely a matter of networks and relationships,” he says. Without the right support systems and access, many promising ventures risk stalling before they ever reach their full potential.

The solution? Genuine partnerships. “We all need each other. And we can’t talk about partnerships if we don’t live that as a value,” Ian affirms. It’s not enough to pick winning ideas; the ecosystem must also nurture them, build ladders to scale, and graduate businesses that can employ hundreds, or thousands, and compete globally.
From pipeline creation to capital access, Africa’s entrepreneurial rise depends not only on great ideas, but on the collective effort to back them. Ian reminds us that scaling is a journey. And Africa’s journey will be led by those daring enough to build the road ahead.
