Zambia’s turning point in the race for clean and reliable energy
East Africa’s Gateway to Green Innovation
Kenya is quietly emerging as one of the global leaders in renewable energy. With a grid composed of over 90% renewables. Hydro, geothermal, solar, and wind, the country is laying a powerful foundation for the future. But for Douglas Injugu, this is just the beginning.

“There’s a lot of potential businesses revolving around renewable energy,” says Douglas. From his position at the intersection of innovation and international partnerships, Douglas has witnessed firsthand how East Africa is transforming into a green energy hub.
A standout example is the Lake Turkana Wind Power Project, Africa’s largest wind farm. Estimated at €600 million, it brought together a consortium of global investors including Norfund and Finnfund. The project not only demonstrates investor confidence but also the scale of opportunity. “That project alone is looking at potential profits of around $30 to $50 million annually,” Douglas notes. “It shows the level of power demand already being utilized in Kenya.”

And the momentum is growing. A $1 billion data centre is in development, set to run on geothermal energy, a move that merges digital infrastructure with sustainable energy.
Kenya’s government has also laid down clear policies to encourage electric mobility, with locally assembled EVs expected to roll out in greater numbers in the coming years. “All of this is contributing to opening up East Africa as a gateway for business,” Douglas emphasizes. “With a regional population of over 300 million, the market is vast and untapped.”

This green transformation it’s about enabling innovation ecosystems, attracting smart capital, and driving sustainable development. And with advocates like Douglas Injugu at the helm, bridging public, private, and international sectors, the vision for a renewable-powered, innovation-driven East Africa is already taking shape.
