The 8th Nordic-African Business Summit, 2018 was hosted by the Norwegian-African Business Association (NABA) in partnership with Norfund – the government’s investment fund, and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Summit is now recognised as Northern Europe’s leading business conference dedicated to the African continent and has successfully established itself as a key arena for facilitating trade and business connections between Nordic and African countries.
The 2018 theme – ”The Blue Opportunity” is particularly relevant to the African continent, with its miles of coastline and large inland lakes. With their experience and expertise, Norwegian companies are well placed to make important contributions to the development of the blue economy in Africa.
Why? Because the Nordics are connected to the ocean. Be it water for hydropower, the blue sky and sun transformed to solar energy, aquaculture, the resources under the ocean surface, the ports and shipping companies who are moving 90 percent of the continent’s import and export on African waters.
Economic growth is crucial for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. However, this growth must be based on sustainable use of the Earth’s resources.
By 2030, it is expected that many ocean-based industries will outperform the growth of the global economy. The oceans represent huge untapped opportunities and will be crucial to ensure sustainable economic growth and food security.
At the same time, our oceans are under increasing pressure from pollution, over-exploitation and climate change. It is crucial that we treat them with more care. Cleaner and healthier oceans are vital if we are to safeguard future blue opportunities.
